Jason Stakem
 Medium: Stoneware
jmstakem@hotmail.com

Jason Stakem is a Western Maryland native who makes mostly thrown and altered pottery, both functional and decorative. His main interest is wood firing, and most of his work is from his recently built wood-fired kiln. The pieces collect wood ash throughout the firing process, giving the surfaces a subtle yet varied coloring from the natural ash and flame passing through the kiln.

Jason graduated from FSU in '99 with Bachelors degree in Geography and is currently finishing up a Spanish degree. Wandering the halls when he should have been in class, he noticed a summer session ceramics class was being offered. He quickly dropped the geography class and picked up the ceramics class. By the end of that summer he had his own wheel and has been making pots ever since. His interest in wood firing, which is a difficult and demanding firing process, stems from the simplicity of the factors involved. earth, wind and fire.
